Family Device Safety and Account Recovery

IN SHORT INDIVIDUALS & FAMILIES

Enetsec examines phones, tablets and computers to find out whether someone else has access to them. The lab has analysed more than 6,000 cases since 1999. Every examination follows chain of custody, so what we find is documented and can be used later if you need it.

Most people who call this number are not sure whether anything is actually wrong. They have a feeling. The phone is behaving oddly, someone seems to know things they should not, or an account stopped working and the recovery email is not theirs any more.

That uncertainty is the hardest part, and it is the part we can usually fix quickly. Either something is there or it is not, and either way you get an answer.

WHAT WE HELP WITH

What we help with

Finding out whether a device has been compromised

We examine your own phone, tablet or computer for signs that someone else has access to it. That includes spyware and stalkerware applications, configuration profiles installed without your knowledge, unrecognised device pairings, and account sessions logged in from places you have never been.

We do this on devices you own or are lawfully entitled to examine. That is the whole boundary and it is not negotiable.

Getting your accounts back

Email, social media, cloud storage, banking and messaging accounts. When an account is taken, the attacker usually changes the recovery details first, which is why the ordinary “forgot password” route stops working. We work through the platform’s own recovery process with the evidence needed to support it, and we document what happened along the way.

Household and minor safety

Parents call about a child’s device, about contact from an adult they do not recognise, or about content the child has been sent. We work with the parent or guardian on devices they are legally responsible for. We are also honest about when a matter should go to law enforcement rather than to a private laboratory, and we will say so on the first call.

Spyware and stalkerware detection

Stalkerware is software installed on a phone by someone with physical access to it, usually to read messages and track location. It is more common than most people expect and it is often installed by someone the victim knows. Detection means examining the device properly, not running a consumer scanning app that the software is designed to evade.

THE BOUNDARY

What we will not do

THE LINE

We will not access a device or account belonging to someone else. Not a partner’s phone, not an ex’s email, not a colleague’s laptop. There is no version of this request we take, no matter how it is framed and no matter what the circumstances are.

This matters to you even if you would never ask. An examiner who takes that work is an examiner whose testimony is worth nothing, and a laboratory that takes that work is one whose findings can be challenged in every case it touches. The line protects our clients as much as it protects anyone else.

If you need lawful access to someone else’s device for a legal matter, that is a different conversation and it starts with your attorney and a court order. We do that work properly, through counsel, on the expert witness and litigation support side of the practice.

HOW IT RUNS

How an examination runs

  1. We start with a conversation, not a device. In our experience the first ten minutes tell us more than the first hour of technical work, because what you have noticed narrows where to look.

  2. If an examination makes sense, the device is imaged. We work from the forensic image rather than the original, so nothing on your phone is altered by the examination. Every step is logged: date, tool, version, examiner. If what we find ever needs to go to a lawyer, a platform or the police, it is already documented to the standard those people expect.

  3. You get a written report in plain English, and a conversation about what it means. Where there is something to remove or lock down, we walk you through doing it.

QUESTIONS WE ARE ASKED

Frequently Asked Questions

NO. 1 Can you tell me if my phone has spyware or stalkerware on it?

Yes, on a device you own or are lawfully entitled to examine. We look for known stalkerware applications, hidden configuration profiles, unauthorised device pairings and account sessions you did not create. Consumer scanner apps miss most of this, because commercial stalkerware is written specifically to avoid them. A proper examination works from a forensic image of the device rather than from inside the running phone, which is why it finds things the phone itself will not show you.

NO. 2 Will an examination damage my device or alter my data?

No. We create a forensic image of the device and examine the copy, so the original is not modified during analysis. The image is hashed on creation and the hash is recorded, which is how we can demonstrate later that nothing changed. Your phone is returned in the condition it arrived in. Where a specific acquisition method would alter anything at all, we tell you before we start and explain the alternative.

NO. 3 I share a phone plan or an account with the person I am worried about. What now?

Say that on the first call, because it changes the approach. Shared plans, family sharing groups and jointly held accounts can expose location, message previews and purchase history without anything being installed on the device at all. We can identify what a shared arrangement is actually exposing and help you separate accounts safely. Where safety is a concern, we sequence the changes so nothing alerts the other party before you are ready.

NO. 4 Is it legal for me to have my own phone examined?

Yes. Examining a device you own, or one you are legally responsible for such as a minor child’s device where you are the parent or guardian, is lawful. What is not lawful is accessing a device or account belonging to another adult without their authorisation or a court order, and we do not do that work under any circumstances. If you are unsure which category your situation falls into, tell us the facts and we will tell you plainly before any work starts.

NO. 5 My child received contact from an adult I do not know. Should I call you or the police?

Call the police, and call them first. If a minor is being contacted or solicited by an adult, that is a law enforcement matter and time matters. What we can do alongside that is preserve the evidence properly before anything is deleted, so investigators receive a documented record rather than screenshots. Do not delete the messages, do not confront the account, and do not reset the device.
